SYRIAN TURKMEN COUNCIL
As an essential component of the Syrian people, the Turkmens have lived in unity, peace, and harmony with other communities in various regions of Syria for over a millennium. These regions include Aleppo, Latakia, Tartus, Homs, Hama, Golan, Damascus and its countryside, Raqqa, Deraa, and Idlib. However, when the chauvinistic Baath regime seized power in Syria, it began to implement exclusionary and discriminatory policies against all components, including the Turkmens.
For decades, the Turkmen people have suffered under these policies and, in response to the injustice, oppression, and tyranny, they were compelled to rise against the tyrannical regime to reclaim their usurped rights.
Since the blessed Syrian revolution began in March 2011, Turkmens have actively participated in both the political and military wings of the revolution. The establishment of the Syrian Turkmen Council in March 2013 marked a significant milestone in Turkmen political engagement. Soon after its formation, the Council was recognized as the legitimate representative of the Turkmen people by all revolutionary institutions, including the Syrian National Coalition of Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, as well as by countries friendly to the Syrian people.
Given the rapid political and military developments in the Syrian revolution, it became increasingly important to institutionalize the Turkmens' contributions to the revolution and formalize the structure of the Syrian Turkmen Council. This restructuring is crucial for securing the rights of Turkmens in the new Syria and ensuring their rightful place in the country's future.
